Geek Made Chic

Imperial Fashion

Although I will forever be on the Light side of the Force, you have to admit, the Empire had better fashion sense.

While I am most certainly a lover of geek fashion, alas, I’m not a fan of the majority of designs out there for geek women. Just not my style (or body type. With my taller stature and long, thin waist coupled with short inseam, it doesn’t lend well to popular styles of skater dresses or high waistlines). Though I love the idea behind companies like Her Universe – bringing geek fashion directly to female fans. Geek girls have often been ignored in favour of guys, relegated only to simple tshirts. But no more! It’s an amazing time we live in that such companies, like Her Universe, exist and are flourishing.

kmphoto-imperial-9413I love this cardigan! I’ve been wearing it so much since I bought it (as, truth be told, the outfit in this post is exactly what I wear normally. In fact, this may be the outfit I’ve worn most this fall). It’s subtle in its geekery where it looks like a fairly normal cardigan. But to those who know Star Wars, they will recognize it as a piece based off Grand Moff Tarkin’s imperial uniform, complete with matching coloured rankings.

kmphoto-imperial-9527It’s well constructed in a heavier cotton-esque knit. I love the 3/4 length sleeves as I inevitably push my sleeves up that high anyways out of habit. It’s not too warm, not too thin (which I find is a problem with many a cardigan or sweater these days). It’s just right. In what seems to be typical for HU’s designs, the cardigan is on the shorter side and ends above the hips (well, on me anyways). For any other HU piece I’ve tried one, that’s a deal killer. But due to the construction of this cardigan with it’s wide banded bottom, it actually works quite well.

kmphoto-imperial-9459My little twist on it is that I always wear it open, but buttoned by one button at the top. It keeps some air flow underneath the cardigan and acts as a colour break from all the black. (I went with black as an easier option than driving myself crazy trying to find pants to match the cardigan.)

And a view of the cardigan closed. (You’ll have to forgive my slight frown. Even overcast, shooting outside still makes me squint. ‘Tis the downside of having great eyesight…yay photosensitivity!)

Rey and Kylo Ren Photoshoot

August 31, 2018 by The Lady Nerd Leave a Comment

As the 2018 weekend of Dragoncon is upon us, I thought it’s high time I share another good cosplay shoot on here. One of the great things about being part of the geek community is, well,…the community! While there are certainly some negative gatekeepers and nasty folks on the fringes, they are not the norm. Most of the time we support each other, lift each other, and help each other with projects. So when my friend Stephanie told me her partner had just done his very first cosplay ever and wanted to do a photoshoot, I gladly jumped in.

Stephanie and Jeremy worked hard to create as screen accurate of a Kylo Ren as they could. We partnered up with David Leo and Patrick Sun for Jeremy’s very first photoshoot (so many firsts!), wandered on down to a local park, threw up some smoke bombs, and got to modeling!

Darth Vader Leather Jacket

January 18, 2018 by The Lady Nerd 8 Comments

This post contains affiliate linksDarth Vader Leather Jacket the lady nerd

In my continued flirtations with the Dark Side of fashion, today I bring you another outerwear from Her Universe and Hot Topic – the beautifully designed Darth Vader jacket. This is one of my favourite pieces out there in the world of geek fashion with it’s subtle tones, understated, but well-crafted design to mimic Vader’s suit. Not to mention it is the epitome of “stealth geek”. For those who know what it is, the Vader design can be clearly seen. But for those not in the know of the culture icon, it simply looks like a stylish leather jacket. Perfect for a model off-duty look.

12360131_10154396157443662_6179332622267083029_nkmphoto-starwars-9804kmphoto-starwars-9619kmphoto-starwars-9599I opted to experiment a little with this shoot in changing the proportions of the top and bottom (normally I wear tighter tops and looser bottoms. But here I swapped as well as going for a shorter top and longer bottom when I usually do the opposite to cover my Na’vi-length torso). It felt awkward on, but seeing the photos now I like the effect. It makes me look so much taller! I’m 5’8″, but with a 29 inch inseam. So unless I’m wearing the right proportions, I look shorter than I really am.)

kmphoto-starwars-9586 kmphoto-starwars-9666Then there’s the boots….I bought this pair of Steve Madden over-the-knee boots (on sale!) specifically for this shoot intent on returning them afterwards, but after a barrage of friends gave me the “don’t you dare!” I guess I’m keeping them…

kmphoto-starwars-9845 There’s a few wonderful details hidden throughout the jacket that bear mentioning. From the subtle pops of red to give a nod to the crimson hues of a Sith lightsaber to the imperial logo etched on the back of the jacket to the message hidden on the interior lining, this jacket is a true work of geek fashion art.

kmphoto-starwars-9743 kmphoto-starwars-9870 10620631_10101171438694728_1387164952943616591_nWith great regret though, I have to admit that the jacket doesn’t fit me. “But it fits in the photos so well!” Ah, and here is the great secret of many a modeling photoshoot – clips. I cut a lean figure with a very long, thin torso so even clothes made in the XS variety don’t fit me most of the time. Usually I get my clothes cheaply tailored, but every so often there comes a piece like this where I can’t afford to have it tailored. This jacket is better suited to those with short-to-average torsos and more curves than little ol’ stick me. (You can actually see in the first photo at the top of the blog how far the jacket flares out, almost peplum-like on me. I prefer a sleeker cut.) I’m still keeping the jacket as there’s nothing else out there like it.

H&M Han Solo

It’s amazing the things you can find at your local mall if you look hard enough. Or, as what happened in the case, smacked me square in the face. On an outing with a friend recently, we decided to peruse on of our favourite stores, H&M. No sooner had we walked in then I saw them…
H&M Navy Pants with Red Stripe. Perfect for a fashion Han Solo!

H&M Navy Pants with Side Stripes – $34.99

I turned to my friend as her face registered the same thought. In less than 12 parsecs, my friend and I went tearing around the store to build a certain smuggler’s outfit with what pieces we could find. Although I have pieces at home I could use, we were having entirely too much fun confusing the poor employees and amusing ourselves with our geekbounding luck. I felt a looser button up silk blouse would be best to match the dressy style of the pants. Alas, they were sold out. But we did manage to find a safari-esque button-up collared top in clearance. Paired with a mens’ vest (as there were no womens’ vests to be found), my own boots, belt, and a smug smile and VOILA! A femme scruffy looking nerfherder appeared!

H&M Han Solo. Geekbounding with navy and red striped pants by The Lady NerdBetter yet, the pants are quite comfy. I wasn’t sure what the make of the bunched elastic waist at the back (my upper lip may have curled slightly into what one might call a sneer), but then I put the pants on. Oh. OHH. It made the sleek-looking waistband fit like a glove, but a comfortable one. The pants themselves have cropped leg hems but those become a non-issue when tucked into knee-high boots. Now would be a great time to snatch up these pants for a geekbounding Han Solo, especially with the film coming out in May.

Here’s a few shirt options from H&M:

Linen Shirt – $24.99 (the same as I’m wearing in the above picture)
Polyester Blouse -$17.99
Satin Blouse – $24.99
Long-sleeve Button Blouse – $24.99
Fitted V-neck Shirt – $19.99
Creped Blouse – $29.99
V-Neck Blouse – $24.99

Black Suit Vest – $24.99

But that’s not all! Oh no, in the outerwear section we found a great everyday navy winter coat, perfect for a geekbounding Echo Base Han Solo. Pair it with some tan pants (of which there were NONE in the store for me to try on for pictures) and ta-dah!

Echo Base Han Solo at H&M with a navy coat by The Lady NerdThis particular one I couldn’t find on the website, but should still be in stores. For you crafty sorts, here’s some other options that would work (though the fur trim on the collar would need to be switched out for lighter brown fur).

Navy Padded Parka – $54.99

Happy hunting!

Admiral Holdo’s Bracelet – A Lucky Find

December 15, 2017 by The Lady Nerd 11 Comments

Sometimes one has to go through a painstaking process of custom building a piece for a cosplay or outfit, shelling out more money then we really care to admit. Other times, we get lucky. Really really lucky. I found myself in the latter group last night as I watched Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Holdo glide across the screen in a slinky, but regal mauve number. Suddenly a closeup of her arm appeared and I audibly squealed. I recognized the bracelet. I have the EXACT SAME ONE. I bought it in 2012 from Forever 21 for my Vogue Loki. What are the odds?!

The Lady Nerd Lady LokiBut lucky for you guys, it appears the same cuff bracelet is being sold right now! Below are links to where I could find it. (I’m including multiple things as I know how us cosplayers can get. We find a screen accurate item and snatch it up faster than you can blink!) Now it’s gold, so you’ll have to get crafty and paint them to match Admiral Holdo’s. But it certainly beats making it from scratch. Good luck and happy cosplaying!

Loungefly Star Wars Rebel Canto Bag Review

December 13, 2017 by The Lady Nerd 5 Comments

Loungefly Last Jedi Bag

This is not a sponsored post.

For my first ever review on this blog, today I’m featuring another first – my first handbag purchase! (Or maybe I just wanted to see how many times I could write “first” in one sentence…English majors, forgive me.) I’ve always bought whatever cheap, basic black handbag I could find at Ross or TJ Maxx to satisfy my utilitarian needs. Despite being a fashionista cliche, I’ve never been into handbags. They’ve never caught my eye for anything past functional purpose.

Until now.

Now I’m a fashion cliche. NO REGRETS. Let’s take a closer look at this beauty, shall we?

Behold Loungefly’s Star Wars Rebel Canto Bag from their recent The Last Jedi line. Made from saffiano faux leather, this subtle geek chic bag features a polished design of elegant black and silvery gold usually reserved for Imperial styles (whoever made the decision to use Rebel symbols instead, you’re a mad genius and this Rebel loves you for it. The Imperials and First Order can’t have all the sleek chic fun!). Both sides feature a symmetrical quilted pattern with Star Wars themed metal plaque. Having a neutral palette, this bag pairs well with just about any outfit and functions well for both the everyday and formal.

Loungefly The Last Jedi BagThe Rebel Alliance metal plaques on the front and tab appear to be made out of a metal that in some lights looks silver and others, gold. (So it will go with both your cool and warm tone outfits!)

Fun Fact: The “Canto” in the title of this bag comes from the name of a new location in The Last Jedi called Canto Bight – a Star Wars version of Monte Carlo, with all the alien swank of a James Bond casino scene. (Being a lifelong lover all things spy, chic, and sci-fi, this has got me written All. Over. It. I can’t wait to see the scene!) Not all rebels are scruffy nerfherders, after all!

Loungefly The Last Jedi Bag Detail Loungefly The Last Jedi Bag RebelLoungefly The Last Jedi Bag RebelI was pleased to see that this bag is a medium size, approximately 13 inches wide by 10 inches high by 5.75 inches deep. It feels not too small nor too big, but just right. It can be carried by the handles by hand or at the elbow. Thankfully, it also has a removeable shoulder strap (I’m definitely a shoulder strap bag kind of gal) so there are multiple ways to wear this bag to your personal comfort level.

Loungefly The Last Jedi Bag Shoulder StrapFun Fact: The faux leather material this bag is made out of is known as “Saffiano” leather. The name refers to the crosshatch pattern that was pressed into the wax that coated the leather. It originated from a particular tannery in Italy and was an exclusive patent of Prada, but has now spread to many different countries and design houses. So this faux leather version is wonderful nod to those luxury lines.

Loungefly Star Wars Bag Saffiano LeatherMy only gripe with this bag comes with the interior design. The top is an open one, with one half-loop tab that magnetically clicks into place. This neither protects from the elements or makes the bag easy to get into as the tab hangs in a rather awkward space. Granted, this may be because I’m not used to this sort of closure, but from my purely subjective standpoint, I would’ve rather had a simple zipper to open and close the entire top.

Loungefly The Last Jedi Bag ClosureThe interior is divided into two sections with pockets on either side with a beautiful art deco X-Wing pattern (Another bonus for me as the X-Wing Starfighter is my favourite sci-fi spacecraft). The front has a convenient open pocket to slide your phone into while the back has a zippered pocket for any valuables. I have not yet tested the limits of how much can be put into the purse, but it’s perfectly suited for my minimalistic needs (although it does fit an Instax Mini camera as I discovered on a recent photoshoot!).

Loungefly The Last Jedi bag pockets Loungefly The Last Jedi BagCurrently, the bag retails at $70 USD, though Amazon has had some sales on it, but be quick! This bag has sold out once already (looks to be selling out fast again)! So keep checking back daily on the links below. Here’s where you can purchase it:

Star Wars Rebel Canto Bag – Amazon – $70.00 USD
Star Wars Rebel Canto Bag – Loungefly – $70.00 USD
Star Wars Rebel Canto Bag – Think Geek – $69.99 USD
There’s also a matching wallet!
Star Wars Rebel Canto Wallet – Amazon – $40.00 USD
Star Wars Rebel Canto Wallet – Loungefly – $40.00 USD

Fun Fact: All these pictures were taken with my phone, the Samsung Galaxy S7 because I left my camera with a friend doing auditions. Oops…But I am really amazed with the quality! Phone cameras have come so far.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rey Cosplay – Construction Notes 2

January 8, 2016 by The Lady Nerd 26 Comments

Rey_0001As a new leaf has turned over this year, I think it’s high time for an update on my Rey costume. Alas, I am nowhere as far along as I would like (perfectionism has it’s drawbacks sometimes). But as this is also a how-to-guide for anyone who stumbles across it, I feel duty-bound to update. So here goes!

To start, one of the lovely members on the RPF fixed my artwork to match Rey’s costume (as I originally drew the artwork before we knew what the back of her costume looked like). So here’s the updated version for those of you who have been using my turnaround for reference. 🙂

ReyTurnaround_revisions
Since I’m a linear thinker, I’ll be starting from the top in updating both my progress and observations for Rey. (If any of you reading this have any questions for your Rey cosplay feel free to leave a comment and I’ll help out where I can!)

Hair
I’m still trying to figure out how to do her hairstyle, to be perfectly honest. I am an absolute dunce when it comes to hair (I can barely braid!). There’s a wonderful tutorial on Youtube that I’ve been trying…

Though, I realized that longer hair doesn’t work as well with this hairstyle. It may just be me and my clumsiness, but my hair kept getting horribly tangled in trying to put up the buns. So since I needed to chop off my unhealthy hair anyways….12522966_1042449212474347_8986082793727217186_nMajor thing to note on Rey’s hair that I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere. Upon viewing The Force Awakens for a second time, I realized that the top of Rey’s hair is actually braided (or pulled back into a mini tail). I’m not sure if it extends farther than the top piece. But it’s certainly something to note.tumblr_nyqz5sK86T1srtfabo1_500

Undershirt
I bought the Hemp Jersey cotton fabric from Dharma Trading. Still need to wash it before sewing. The length comes down to brush her hips. One interesting thing to note is that the sleeves of the undershirt are two different styles.Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rey (Daisy Ridley) Ph: David James ©Lucasfilm 2015

Alas, I do not know enough about sewing to know what the different techniques are called to achieve the effect (I’ve heard the term “lettuce hem” thrown around a few times).

Wrap dress
I’m still debating the right fabric for this as the bottom of the wrap shows a thatching sort of weave. But the top is much thicker and gathered, where that thatching is not as apparent. I’m going by the listing from Star Wars Celebration that the wrap dress is viscose. The only one I’ve been able to find that seems close is the viscose silk blend from Dharma Trading.
SK1DZsi
Arm wraps
I’m currently in the experimenting phase of trying to find the right material for the arm wraps. The general consensus is that the arm wraps of medical gauze. The trick is finding the right one. I’ve got differing styles from Ace, Band-Aid, Walmart generic, etc. ranging from self-adhering to fabric. Next is to tea dye them, distress them up a bit, and see which one looks best. Though one major thing to note, in the film costume they used a sleeve underneath to attach the wraps too. (You can see it in the first scene Rey shows up in where she drinks from her cantina. There’s a gap in the wraps where you can see the undersleeve. It appears to be a similar colour as the wraps.) You can actually see it poking out of the top of the left arm wrap in the picture I posted above in the wrap dress section.

Cuff
I bought a wonderful looking cuff from the folks at Leather Clad Legends. A beautiful, reasonably priced piece.

Rey Leather Cuff
Belt
I haven’t started on this piece yet. So I’ll save that  for another update.

Pants
I made the mistake of buying the raw silk from Dharma Trading thinking it was the right fabric. But then I got my hands on a hi-res picture of Rey’s pants and realized they’re not nubby. They’re smooth and have a sort of crepe feel to them. Alas, I haven’t been able to find a suitable alternative yet. And since I have 3 yards of raw silk, I’m going to use it. However, the team I’m working with to make this costume found that the back side of the raw silk was smoother and less nubby. So we’re going to try making the pants out of the wrong-side raw silk and see how it looks.

Rey pants
Boots
I got the screen accurate boots from Po-Zu (courtesy of a kind boyfriend taking pity on me for having to use the money I had saved up for the boots on medical bills). They are marvelous! No exaggeration, they are the comfiest shoes I have ever worn in my life. The inside is plush almost like memory foam so it gives the feeling of a slipper more than a boot. But the rugged outside made out of all natural materials (seriously! The soles feel like rubber but are actually made out of beeswax and cork. I wish more companies that), keep it a boot.

I haven’t started on this piece yet. So I’ll save that  for another update.

Everyday Rey

December 17, 2015 by The Lady Nerd 2 Comments

While I mainly lean towards the couture side of things with gown versions of popular characters, sometimes certain costumes are just better suited to casual wear. Such I feel is the case with Rey and her rugged, but simplistic looking outfit. So I drew up an outfit that would be easy to translate into regular 21st century everyday clothes.

Everyday Rey The Lady Nerd
Hair
A simple bun would do nicely! (Unless one wants to go for the gusto and do Rey’s 3-bun style, which I still have yet to figure out…)

Top
This style is a variation on the popular wrap shirt. I’ve seen this particular sleeveless variation often this summer (and kicking myself that I didn’t pick up a white one to dye). It would be ideal to find a top that has the look of two-in-one, but if you can only find the outer wrap top, just throw a tank top underneath it and voila! (And if you can’t find the top in the right sandy colour, try getting a white top and dyeing it to the right shade with RIT dye.)

Karen Kane Wrap TopKaren Kane Sleeveless Wrap Top

Belt

I didn’t think about it when drawing as I was going for a thicker banded bottom to the top, but it would entirely be appropriate to pair a brown leather belt with it at as well in reference to Rey’s costume.

Pants
I plan on just using the pants from my Rey costume, but thankfully her pants style is fairly easy to find (or find pants to alter). In the film they’re of a silk fabric, but any soft fabric should do for an everyday look. Alas, they’re out of season right now, but who knows you might get lucky in thrifting!

Shoes
Since I have them (and they are SUPER comfy!), I’ll be using the Po-Zu Piper boots that were used in the film. But they can be a little steep in price for some, so here are a couple of cheaper alternatives…

If you happen to put this outfit together, take a picture and send it to me! I’d love to see it. 🙂 Now all of this being said, I’m totally working on a couture gown version of Rey too….(predictable? Who, me?)

Force For Fashion

December 14, 2015 by The Lady Nerd Leave a Comment

Force 4 Fashion
In honour of Star Wars week, I’ll be rolling out various SW themed posts ranging from the couture to costumes. Today’s post features a rather fabulous charity event called Force 4 Fashion. A bevy of top designers teamed up under the guide of Disney Consumer Products and Bloomingdales to create looks based on the new film, The Force Awakens. These particular designers were geeks themselves, having loved Star Wars for years or having been shaped by the iconic films.  So on December 2nd, a star-studded group attended the campaign of a fusion of pop culture and fashion in New York presented by Kay Jewelers.

BB8 Cynthia RowleyBB8 by Cynthia Rowley

Each look was displayed in all of Bloomingdale’s 57th street windows through December 18th. Now something quite nifty is that these outfits are being sold to the public! These outfits are being auctioned off on CharityBuzz.com to benefit the Child Mind Institute – a charitable initiative that empowers people to make a positive impact on the world around them.
