Geek Made Chic

Dorothy in the Woods of Oz

Me being me, I had to do a geek twist on it (shocking, I know!). One character immediately springs to mind with gingham – Dorothy Gale from the Wizard of Oz. And seeing as how this year is the 80th anniversary of the 1939 film, there were too many layers of appropriateness to ignore.

But where does one do that in the cold November day? I wracked my brain through Munchkin-land potentials or Emerald-City likelihoods. But I kept coming up short.
As I mindlessly scrolled through Pinterest, I huffed and looked out the window. A canopy of fall leaves greeting me, turning hues of gold, marigold, and ochre.

That was it!

The yellow brick road!

Except in the trees. Not the ground. Eh, it’s not perfect, but Dorothy has her head in the clouds, right?

Photographed by Catherine, The Gluttonous GeekAfter a batting of eyelashes at my roommate and a bribery of tea later, we packed up to go to a park almost literally in our backyard, the Dunwoody Nature Center. We arrived to chilly temperatures, threatening to fall by the minute. In normal clothes, I would’ve noped out of it real fast, but photoshoots tend to bring out a stubborn will of IRON from me that will not be defeated by the elements. (Though I did have the sense to bring along a suitably matched coat. I’m not completely hopeless!) So onwards we went, happily snapping away amid the flora, occasionally interrupted by screaming lines of children running to the playground. After traversing the winding paths, thinking better of laying down in wet leaves, and no longer being able to feel my fingers, Catherine and I called it a day. Steaming hot cups of chai awaited us at home to toast our victory of a shoot well done.
