Mock Spider-girl Comic Covers

My friend Robb made these awesome mock comic covers of my Spider-girl shoot with Michael Rivera. My jaw dropped when I got this in my inbox. How cool is this?! Definitely keeping this as a bit of self-motivation when I’m feeling down about post-accident setbacks. A hero always gets back up, right?

My friends make me seem way too cool. Don’t let the swanky photos fool you. I’m just a goofball from Atlanta with a penchant for entirely too cups of tea and lazy daily cat naps. But I’m totally down for looking like I’m going to take down a lizard crime boss on the weekends! (Do lizard mutants count? If so, then maybe during the week too for my day-job. Hm, maybe I do have an alter ego…)

My Little Black Dress

July 20, 2018 by The Lady Nerd Leave a Comment

IMG_6826One of the staples oft’ recommended for a woman’s closet is the famous Little Black Dress (or LBD for short). Some would even say it is THE wardrobe essential. It’s a timeless classic that has the advantage of fitting into just about any fashion style. No matter if your personal style is old Hollywood Glamour, modern, preppy, goth, etc. the Little Black Dress suits all.  It can be dressed up and dressed down, depending on the occasion, making it incredibly versatile.

Misc7While the true history of the little black dress is a matter of debate, it is most often traced back to Coco Chanel with her Gallic chic stamp on both local French and global fashion. The next most notable LBD (if not of all time) is Audrey Hepburn’s famous black dress in the film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

IMG_6823Black also has the added advantage of being a flattering colour on anyone. Not only that but it’s a universally slimming colour (especially if there are well-placed seam lines to suit an individual’s body type. Example: Princess seams for a flattering torso).

IMG_6798While I’m currently in search of a new staple due to weight gain, my previous go-to LBD for years was a sleek little number I bought in New Zealand. I loved the mix of business and cocktail dress that it exuded. I would wear it as-is for a night on the town or throw a business blazer over it for a client meeting.

Heist4(This was an outtake from a Selina Kyle photoshoot I did a few years back, hence the odd about-to-steal-something pose. Mwahahahahaha. I mean, wait, you thought you were going to read an entire fashion post from me and there not be some fandom connection. You must be new here…)

Sci-fi Photoshoot

July 13, 2018 by The Lady Nerd 1 Comment

Sci-fi HeroineRecently, my cosplay and modeling have been on hold for a myriad of reasons (work, money, weight gain, depression, etc.) So I thought, rather than wallow in frustrations of the present, that perhaps it would be a better idea to showcase some fun from the past. Some of you are new to my little spot of the blog-o-sphere, so here’s a lesser known photoshoot of mine from days gone by.

Back in 2015 I had the privilege of shooting with visiting NYC Photographer, Richard Scalzo. One of my favourite makeup artists, Dustin of DSL Design and Talent was also on board for the shoot (you may recognize his name from also having done makeup for my Bride of Frankenstein shoot). We started the day with some test shots in corporate wear, fitness looks, but being the weirdo I am, I had to bat my eyelashes for something a little different. Thankfully, Richard was entirely on board with my weirdness and even brought props. Ah, a melding of creative minds.

Sci-fi HeroineI reused my old Catwoman suit, donned a pair of light-up cyber glasses from Illumi Nation, and stepped up to shoot as a sci-fi heroine. I loved Scalzo’s lighting scheme for this, rather reminiscent of the various sci-fi movie character posters. (Also, I don’t my jawline has EVER looked this good. Angles for daaaays!)

Sci-fi HeroineExhibit A here showcases just how ridiculously long my torso actually is! Finding tops and dresses long enough is a real joy, lemme tell you. I thought gaining weight from a size 00 to a size 4 would help with that somewhat. Oh sweet naive Briana…

Sci-fi heroineFun fact: The gun I’m holding is a prop blaster from the 1980s show, V. I grew up knowing the show from my Dad and enjoying the new series (although good heavens did it end badly when they discovered they were being cancelled. ‘Twas a pity).

Embrava Water Bottle

While this is NOT a sponsored post, it does contain affiliate links. I just really like this product and wanted to share it with you!

As I suspected, work has restarted on Season 2 of The Gifted and I find myself saddled with a whole bunch of exhaustion. So blogging has fallen by the wayside. But life is always about getting back on the bandwagon when you fall off, right? So here we go!

Behold the Embrava Water Bottle.

Embrava Water bottle. Modeled by The Lady Nerd. Photo by Kyle Matthew WilliamsI love this thing! A couple years ago I went looking for a glass water bottle. I bought a few different ones, but found they leaked a bunch or were breakable (because it’s well…glass. Shocking, I know). While searching glass water bottles on Amazon, the Embrava water bottle came up in the results. It didn’t look like glass so why was it in my search results? I read down into the description to see this claim, “We offer the same pure taste that those glass water bottles do, but with the added benefit of shatter resistant durability.”

Colour me intrigued.

I decided to order one to see if it was it claimed. I can happily say that it lives up to the hype! It features BPA-free materials and comes in a large 32 oz. size (so it’s easy for me to drink my daily 64 oz. of water). Not only that, but I love the drink spout design. As weird as it sounds, it quickly delivers water in a way that fits my tiny child-sized mouth. This has been an odd problem I’ve had with water bottles in the past where it seemed like only a small amount of water would flow through the spout whereas the Embrava’s lid has a fast-flowing design.

I own two of them and have gotten numerous friends hooked on it to the point that we keep throwing accusations of having each other’s water bottles! So to say I recommend this bottle is an understatement. In case you missed it above, click this link to grab one for your daily water intake! – Embrava Water Bottle

Broken Brain

July 4, 2018 by The Lady Nerd 1 Comment

Broken Brain art series by Andrew Artimage and The Lady Nerd.
Some days are as hard
As the day when you broke
When you were taken apart
And couldn’t understand why you

Some days everything hurts
And no one truly understands
Because they weren’t remade
In the image that was once you

Those are the days you fight the hardest
Not to be who you were, no
But because that is who you are
A fighter who reforged her soul

The broken who again become whole
Are the most beautiful of all
Every scar a testament of life
Every jolt of pain a reminder
This is what survival looks like
Pain and laughter and joy
Tears you can’t always hide
And a soul that will never give up the fight
—————————————————————————
My beautiful friend, Stevie surprised me with this poem she wrote to help me get through days that my injured brain hates me (which seems to be all the time lately). So I wanted to share this in hopes that it might help someone else.

Amazing photo by Andrew Artimage (from a never before seen photoshoot of mine from a year or so ago that I’ve been too nervous to share. But I’ve come to realize how powerful these photos are. They are art through which I expressed my inner anguish that, at the time, I was trying to keep hidden from the world to keep up my usual Kaylee Frye-esuqe usual nature. I’m proud I did them).

Brown Peasant Dress

July 2, 2018 by Briana 4 Comments

Brown peasant dressThey say stepping out of your comfort zone can be a good thing. In some cases, I’m rather inclined to agree. In my pursuit of stylish dresses, I tried on one that I wouldn’t normally have picked out. I tried on this little brown number as summer for the past few years have been scorchers and I needed some cool threads. Perhaps it was the fact that I had my hair curled that day (which for me, always makes whatever I’m wearing look 100 times better, even though I’m truly horrible at doing hair. Thanks Mom for saving my bum on this one!), but I skipped along home with dress in tow.

Brown peasant dressThough, I have a confession to make….

Brown peasant dress in a treeI have a love affair with climbing trees. Back in college, it was quite common that if friends were looking for me, I could be found in one of three trees around campus. There was the grove of trees by the administration building, my favourite prayer tree by the school cafeteria, and the Anime Club tree – a perfect climbing tree so large, five of us could fit up there at once! We used to joke that there was a homing beacon inside the tree. If one member of the Club showed up and stood in the tree, within 5 minutes, at least one more Club Member would show up. If was foolproof until some school administrator got the bright idea to cut half of the tree off. I still climbed what was left of the tree, but it wasn’t the same. I couldn’t stand on the farthest thick branch (that’s right, STAND. And stand I would!) like a guardian and watch the people passing below me. Which was always amusing because if a group ever passed by, inevitably the last person in the group would do a double take. Oh the looks were priceless!

I also used one of the higher crooked branches to lean on and meditate. There were times where I just needed to get away from the stress of classes, social drama, etc. I couldn’t focus on the ground, too much chatter. But there’s something relaxing about being up in a tree by oneself. Even if I was troubled, within a few minutes I’d have a smile on my face.

I miss that tree.

I miss climbing trees in general. Where I live, all the trees are very sap-ridden, tick-riddled cedars. So you can imagine my joy at finding a climable tree at Centennial Park in Nashville. I shimmied up those branches faster than you could blink!

Brown peasant dress sitting in a treeBrown peasant dress laying in a treeI felt all sorts of frolicky in this outfit. So naturally, after climbing trees I had to go for a quick jaunt around the field. (Though I’ll admit, I’m not as much of a nature child to go barefoot. My soles were just too tender for that prickly grass!)
