Wendy Darling Dress

February 28, 2018 by The Lady Nerd 6 Comments

This is a sponsored post from Pinup Girl Clothing.

As yet another dismally grey day descends, I like to think of brighter times where the weather was warm and my sun activation mode was entirely engaged. (Fun fact: I am solar powered!) A couple weeks ago, everything aligned to be able to shoot a lovely piece I was sent by Pinup Girl Clothing in California. When I saw the bright blue hue and Peter Pan-esque collar I knew immediately that I had to style this into a look befitting a modern Wendy Darling.

Photographed by The Gluttonous Geek. This dress, known as the Madison, is a lovely spring piece, great for those pesky in between seasons. I was expecting the fabric to be a lightweight cotton, but instead it’s a durable poly-blend of rayon, nylon, and spandex. It might not sound like it, but it’s very comfy. I suffer from health issues often that leave me great pain, so I’m always on the hunt for good-looking comfy clothes. The Madison definitely fits in that category (sans belt, but it still looks adorable without it!). It hugs just the right curves and hits at a great flattering hemline for most body types.

The belt can be worn high up under the chest, as pictured here, or lower on the waist. I chose to put it higher simply to mimic Wendy’s empire waist dress.

Because let’s face it, Wendy likes to scold Peter a LOT.

And hellooooo POCKETS! Oh yes, this dress comes fully armed with that secret weapon we women so desire and rarely get. I’ve been so pleased to see how many of Pinup Girl Clothing’s dresses have pockets. My compliments to the designer!

For future styling notes, I would add at least one piece of Peter Pan jewelry and do tighter Shirley Temple ringlet curls in the back. But bless my friend Angie for attempting to curl my stubborn hair (that, as you can see, fell down almost immediately. My hair pretty much refuses to hold a curl. I think it detests curling irons for some reason). But this look would be perfect for a Wendy Disneybound for Dapper Day or even a themed picnic!

Tearsheet from Inspire Magazine in Atlanta

For a third and final time, I was able to do a shoot for the now-retired Inspire Magazine in Atlanta This time I worked with Rachel of Samonia Portraits and her team. Sometimes student photographers can pull out some amazing shots. I rather like working with college photographers, still practicing their craft and wanting to get their feet wet. There’s a lot of room for collaboration and helping them branch out in content and feel more confident in their work.

We shot at a beautiful abandoned mansion in Atlanta, but oh my…hot Georgia summers (with nearby stagnant water) make for a hotbed of mosquitos! Apparently I was on the lunch menu for a group of local mozzies, so a friend got to play connect-the-dots with my plethora of mosquito bites when I came over for dinner.

Magazine

Tearsheet from Inspire Magazine in Atlanta (2013)

I had the privilege of shooting with Jerrica Raglin again in this fun shoot for Inspire Magazine (which sadly, has gone out of print). After seeing the first issue and realizing that it was specifically an African-American magazine featuring local artists, entrepreneurs, designers, businesses, etc.  I wondered why I was hired. But I decided there was no reason to ask, so I just enjoyed my status there as “token white chic”. It was truly an honour to be there as a blank canvas to showcase local POC talent. Everyone was so lovely, full of vivacious energy (and lots of awesome jams. That hair was so much fun to headbang with!), and we had such a fantastic time that I was very sad to see the magazine go. I would’ve happily continued modeling them as long as they would’ve had me. But without further adieu, check out this super rad look the team designed! They called it “Futuristic Dread Fashion“. I called it the “Fuschia Matrix“. 🙂  (For those not in the know, that is meant as a compliment as the Matrix is one of my favourite movies of all time.)

I remember looking at myself in the mirror during the shoot and being reminding of the Twins from The Matrix: Reloaded. Then suddenly I showed up in print as a duo. Coincidence? I think not.

All That Glitters Is Not Gold

Life has a funny issue of getting in it’s own way (or rather in the way of best laid plans). So while I’m scrambling to get new content edited, here’s a filler blog post of one of my favourite photoshoots to date. I had the privilege of shooting with Jerrica Raglin for Inspire Magazine: Volume 19 in Atlanta in November of 2013. We dubbed this the “faerie geisha” shoot. The hair and makeup sessions were a lot of fun (even if I was cleaning up glitter from where I was shed it in my room three days later. Seriously, it was everywhere. Everywhere).

Casual Spider-girl

February 9, 2018 by The Lady Nerd 12 Comments

While visiting Disney Springs this summer, I happened upon a fun looking clothing collection for the release of the new Spider-Man: Homecoming film.

And then I saw it.

A women’s tank top with a cleverly designed crochet straps forming a web on the back. Right in the middle of the shirt was a circle shaped graphic that with the Spider-man mask overlaid on it was rather reminiscent of a basketball.

It was too perfect. The shirt just screams Mayday Parker, despite the “Spider-MAN” part on it. (For those who don’t know, May “Mayday” Parker, better known as Spider-girl, is Peter Parker’s daughter from an alternate universe. She’s a feisty, resourceful 90s gal with a love for basketball and fighting evildoers.) I paired it of 90s-style shorts from Forever 21, and my trusty Converse for a fun, casual geek summer outfit.

As luck would have it, I got to team up with the folks at Angle 3 Films to bust out this shoot. A match made in geeky heaven! I happened to need photos for my blog and Michael Rivera and David Hoang needed a project for their interns to cut their teeth on. Win-win!

New Haircut

New Year.
New Look.
New Gameplan.

My new haircut! Straight brunette hair with bangs. Hair by students at Aveda Institute. Photography by James Framehsot Garner. Editing by The Lady NerdLast year held a lot of depression, problems, and generally being stuck in a rut. Things have begun to move forward in such a way that I felt I needed a little ‘makeover’ to reflect that. I wanted something simple, but strong. I needed a hairstyle that I could easily maintain with my hectic lifestyle, yet still look polished with. Enter the Blunt Bang.

With my limp noodle hair, there’s not much I can do to make it look great naturally. But as if magic, simply cutting my fringe into a straight-across cut to match my naturally sleek tresses (or flat, limp pieces of string as I like to yell at them most days of the week…) pulls together for a potentially signature look. I can style it just like this or I can do updos for a quirky-cute flair, or style my bangs and various ways (including my beloved Belle/Aeris bangs).

Sometimes you just need a new hairstyle to make you feel like you can take on the world. Or pretend you’re a super secret agent. Whatever floats your boat.

Spider-girl for Charity

February 3, 2018 by The Lady Nerd 6 Comments

Superhero charity event 2016 at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Photography by Chelsea Patricia. www.chelseapatricia.comAs mentioned in my previous post, I originally wanted to do a Spider-girl cosplay for the express purpose of wearing her to charity events. Alas due to finances and my own near-fatal car accident, I didn’t get to fulfill that goal until late 2016. It was a small holiday meet-and-greet at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where I was joined by my friend Jefferson as Captain America and Valeria as Super-girl.

Photography by Chelsea Patricia. www.chelseapatricia.comMany kids in hospitals are too sick to leave the grounds, so with special permission, sometimes charity groups are allowed in. Rather than going into individual hospital rooms (which can sometimes be dangerous for patients, depending on the severity level of their condition), we stationed ourselves in the lobby where those well enough (or with the help of caretakers) could come see us.

Photography by Chelsea Patricia. www.chelseapatricia.comAs one might expect most were very shy, but there was no mistaking the light in their eyes to see their favourite superheroes or the therapy dogs nearby. It seems like it’s not a big deal, but it can make a world of difference to a child.

Superhero charity event 2016 at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Photography by Chelsea Patricia. www.chelseapatricia.comSuperhero charity event 2016 at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Photography by Chelsea Patricia. www.chelseapatricia.comI remember one charity event I did as Belle from Beauty and the Beast, there was a painfully shy little girl that I got down on the ground to give a hug to. She seemed like she wanted nothing to do with me, only giving me a hug when her parents asked her to. I didn’t think anything of it until her parents told me that the little girl was so excited she almost fainted when she saw me. “We just got back from a Make a Wish trip to Disney world. Belle is her favourite, but there was no Belle when we there. So when she saw you, we told her Belle had come just for her.” (Oh yeah, cue the waterworks on my account!) So I kept that in mind with the quiet, shy children at this charity event. Some were shy or in so much pain they couldn’t bring themselves to smile, but you could still see it in their eyes. I spoke quiet encouragement to some of them, hugged those who wanted it, and posed for pictures for hopefully good memories.

Spider-girl Cosplay

February 2, 2018 by The Lady Nerd 8 Comments

Happy 20th anniversary to the neighbourhood-friendly female web-slinger, Spider-girl!

The first time May “Mayday” Parker appeared in What If? Volume 2: #105 on February 1st, 1998.  The story didn’t follow the main series storyline, but an off-shoot in an alternate universe. In the Clone Saga, Spider-man’s love, Mary Jane Watson miscarried their child. What if the baby had survived as a healthy, bouncing baby girl and later exhibited her father’s same powers? The issue garnered enough interest to launch her own title. Tom Defalco and Ron Frenz set to work creating the spunky May Parker.

I will fully admit that I did not grow up reading Spider-girl. I discovered her while on a personal quest a few years back. I was part of superhero costume charity group called S.O.S.I. (Society of Secret Identities) in Nashville. The main female superhero costumes (Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, etc.) were already being done by other ladies in the group, so I was curious to see if there was another popular, role model female superhero to inspire the kids I’d be visiting. Spider-man was definitely the most popular character by far at whatever charity event we did. Besides a fun personality, I think that might have been due to the fact that his poses were crouches or squats, so he was at the kids’ eye level and therefore felt more approachable. I wanted to capture some of that, especially with shy little girls, so when I discovered Spider-girl in 2010, I set to work finding out what I could about her.

Via a Facebook superhero costuming group, I found a talented costumer, Kino Karou, in the Philippines who specializes in Spider-verse suits. He made this beautiful suit that was set to arrive me to for Dragoncon 2014. But, the day it arrived, I was at Grady hospital fighting for my life after a near-fatal car accident. It took me another year of physical therapy before I could even try on the suit. But it didn’t stop Michael Rivera and I from planning to shoot when I could!

We finally got that opportunity on a warm evening of which we had exactly ONE HOUR to get me dressed, on a rooftop to shoot at golden hour, and get me out of the suit. AND WE DID IT!
